The Red Apple (2009) is a 127 meter high building situated at the top of the Wijnhaveneiland in Rotterdam.

The Red Apple is located in an iconic location, at the head of the Wijnhaveneiland, surrounded on three sides by water, with a view of the Maas and the Oude Haven.

In the skyline of Rotterdam, The Red Apple is characterized by its bright red facade lines. These lines are formed from anodized aluminum panels without further addition of paint. The lines of the tower are oriented vertically and decrease in width towards the top, emphasizing the slender shape of the building. Lines in horizontal direction determine the image of the facade of the main building.

With a wide variety of homes in an intimate urban environment, The Red Apple meets today’s lifestyles.

In the name of the building a relationship is made that Rotterdam is The Big Apple (New York) of the Netherlands. There is also the relationship with the history of Wijnhaveneiland where The Red Apple was realized. The flat-bottomed boats with apples used to moor at the quay of the Wijnhaven. From 1889, an apple market was established at the point where the Scheepmakershaven and the Wijnhaven meet. Finally, The Red Apple building is red in color.

Wijnhaveneiland is located in a strategic location in the city. After the 2nd World War, the area around Wijnhaveneiland was built up with industrial buildings. From the end of the eighties, efforts have been made to turn the Wijnhaveneiland area into an attractive residential area. Architect Kees Christiaanse of KCAP designed the urban plan in which strict rules are laid down for the development with a balance between new and existing buildings and the preservation of sufficient views and sunlight in the area.
